Making sculptures is a form of art that both impresses and baffles most people. The creations are beautiful and can last for quite a few years. The average person does not have much of an idea as to the amount of time and effort that goes into creating them. Learning how
amazing wood and metal sculptures are made helps to understand the passion that the artist put into their work. Some of these have lasted centuries and this is considered one of the oldest craft methods in existence.
Wood carving is a specialized art form. The sculpture has to select the right kind of wood for the feature and use tools of different sizes in order to make the creation. Different types of wood have qualities that have their own benefits. Hardwoods typically last much longer than softwoods but are harder to create. The softer material can be easily manipulated but do not last as long. They both are susceptible to termites, other bugs, and weather and are usually displayed indoors to keep them protected and in good shape.
There are many different types of tools for this work. Chisels, carving knives, and gouges are all used in this process. There are many different sizes and they produce fine lines and rough edges depending on the tool chosen. It is easy to make a mistake so the process is slow and cumbersome to ensure that the final piece is great quality.
The block of wood is the first thing selected. The artist will take time removing larger sections to get to the point that the general shape begins to form. As they continue to carve, they will begin using smaller tools to make more precision cuts and grooves. In the end, they will use the different grades of sandpaper to smooth and finish the shape.
Working with metal is a much different process. Though the history for this type of art does not go as far back, it still has a good and long history. The techniques that are used in modern times is not that different from the original way it is done. Some of the material used may be different, but the technique is very similar.
Wax, rubber molding, and ceramic are all used to help create the original object. Many will use clay to form the first version. Then using the rubber molding they will create another version. Wax is poured into the rubber molding and then worked on again by the artist to make it perfect. The ceramic outer coating is then created and the wax melts away in the process. Finally, the metal is poured into the ceramic mold and hardened. The ceramic is broken and the final object is again worked on by the artist to make it the perfect version.
The original is often made from clay. In fact, some will keep the clay version and have it fired to keep it forever. When the rubberized mold is poured into place it creates a negative version. Once all the steps are completed, the final metal piece is sanded and worked on by the artist to make it just right.
Creating art is something that goes back to prehistoric times. The art of sculpture creation goes back several centuries and some believe predate written communication. They have been used for decoration, religious display, to honor leaders, and in museums.
