The US as a country does not seem to be a habitat for a particular group of individuals only. It is made up of many immigrants from all walks of life be it Latinos, Europeans or even Africans. Of all states in the US, Chicago appears to be the city that has learned and taken much from the mother country. It is a city which has the largest number of immigrants making up the highest percentage of its population; hence, the various cases of
immigration in Chicago.
Walking along its streets, one will notice that the restaurants, shops, and even the market areas have a touch of foreign culture. In schools, it is possible to find that the students can speak over a hundred different mother tongues. It is a place where many cultures seem to converge making it the most metropolitan state in the US.
For a long time now the high number of immigrants in this land has played a crucial role in ensuring that the population of this state is always at equilibrium. The large number of foreigners coming is enough to take the place of the dying natives and even ensure that the population keeps on increasing.
The history of immigrants in this land dates back in the 18s where Chicago was developing as a city. Most of the immigrants especially from Germany, Sweden and England, came as skilled labor for this developing city. By 1840 Chicago was position 92 as the city with the largest population in America. Two decades later, the number of immigrants had increased and was now position nine nationwide.
The immigrants have played a pivotal role in the day to day activities of this state. The many cultures are a sign of the diverged society that views the land as the point of convergence. Every evening different streets may be observed to have some sought of pass time activities that they used to do back in their mother country. There are several museums in Chicago that share the history and culture of where its people have come from.
Apart from the culture, the economy of this nation has immigrants as its wheels. These immigrants usually offer the biggest number of both skilled and semi-skilled labor. More so, the many small scales and even large scale businesses are directly attributed to immigrants. Most shops, for example, are owned by them. They have even established themselves into holding the largest firms around.
The demographical data recorded has taken a different twist in Chicago. The increased population growth that people are used to in this state has become the direct opposite with a declining population recorded in the last census. The Mexican immigrants who were the majority have reduced. In fact, in the last four-year, more Mexicans have run away from this than those who came in.
The main reason for this decline is the low birth rate which has created an aging population within the state. More so, the policy against illegal immigrants has dealt Chicago a major blow. Many of the Mexican immigrants who used to come here undocumented can no longer be able to make the population of this land at a jeopardy.
