human figures in pencil. Whether sketching an acquaintance, colleague, friend or art model, it is important to pay attention to detail. Whether attending class, posing as an art model, or simply sketching for fun, drawing is one area of study which many people find challenging and enjoyable.
When it comes to drawing and sketching, terms used can vary widely. Most often when drawing from a live art model, the correct term is life drawing. Whereas, those drawing from figurines, photographs, skeletons and other items are considered to be figure drawing. In the latter, the form can include different colors, tones, shapes, sizes and postures all created with different mediums.
Life and figure drawing are the two most difficult aspects in this genre. While this is the case, the plethora of art classes in drawing, sketching and other areas now being offered at museums, colleges and universities is on the rise. As a result, there are now more artists working with these different mediums than in quite some time.
There are many different approaches an artist can take when working with the human form. Whether working from skeletons, photographs or live models, the artist also has a choice of different mediums from pen and ink to pencil and crayon. Photography is often accepted as a viable option though many dismiss using this aspect due to the lack of artistic and editing capabilities.
As with other areas of the art world, light and dark play an integral role in some aspects. Using light and dark when participating in life drawing can have majestic effects when used against body surfaces. Many artist also use this process to create various shadows in and among various artwork. One of the most popular areas of the art world in which this technique is used is in photography.
One reason a number of artists prefer to use graphite is that unlike ink and charcoal, it can be erased and manipulated. When using graphite, artists also have more choices when it comes to shades and tones as pencils often come in a variety of soft and hard options. By using these different aspects and elements, an artist can highlight specific points in a piece by casting either a light or shadow on the object.
Some artists prefer to draw in pencil then retrace with ink. While this is a valid artistic process, it does eliminate the ability to correct mistakes. Whereas, many 17th and 18th century artists liked to start with a colored tone then add shade in black while portraying any highlights in white using either crayon or ink. Whereas, others would be found using more vibrant colors when it came to artists like Matisse, Monet and others.
Artists have been taking note and drawing the human form since the earliest of times. Whether cave dwellers, or artists using crayon, charcoal, pen, graphite or ink, most have fun doing so. Although, while cave dwellers often painted a sequence of pictures which provided stories of the past, many artists working today have an eye on the future. Whether that future be having a piece in an art show, gallery, museum or selling original artwork at festivals and other venues.
